Snowboards and ski equipment: why servicing matters.

When it comes to ski equipment and snowboards, servicing matters: poorly maintained gear doesn't just ruin your fun, it can also be dangerous. So, while all good hire companies should provide safe and reliable snowboards and ski equipment, it's still worth checking them over in the hire shop before you sign the rental documents. And as responsible suppliers, the ski shops will take pride in maintaining all the snowboards and ski equipment it supplies, don't accept sub-standard equipment just because you've booked a budget package.

How to check ski equipment

Checking ski equipment is neither complicated nor time-consuming. First, examine the edges of the skis – with care, as they should be sharp! While some dents and irregularities are to be expected, the edges shouldn't be notably jagged or loose. Similarly, the skis' bases may be scratched, but should not be deeply grooved. Bindings must be securely attached and correctly adjusted by the ski equipment supplier. Ski boot buckles should clip firmly into place, while poles should not be bent.

Checkpoints for snowboards

Snowboards too should be given the once-over before hire. Begin by checking the base, which should be flat rather than concave or convex, and free from major scrapes and scratches. Badly-damaged snowboards will need a base re-grind, which is a job for specialists only, not least because the necessary equipment is expensive! Well-maintained snowboards will also be waxed by the rental company and, if necessary, have their edges de-tuned so that they do not catch.
